Old Magazine Covers, Part 7

The October 1962 issue of AUTOSPORT features a great action shot of Jim Tiller and his J2. For those of you not familiar with Jim and his wife Sheila, they have actively raced their J2 for over 50 years, achieving several FTOD at the Brighton Speed Trials along with an attempt at breaking the 200 mph barrier at Bonneville in 2000. Sadly Jim was only able to achieve 197.3 mph...definately a record for an Allard!! To read more about his run at Bonneville, click here.

Mystery Allard

Do you know anything about this unique sports racer that's likely Allard based? The car appears to be 100% Allard between the front and rear wheels, but the front and rear are very unique. These screen shots are from the video below which was shot at the Palm Springs Road Race of March 26, -27, 1955. The car, number 192 must have been a late entrant because it wasn't listed as an entrant. To our knowledge, no formal race results were published.

Bonhams Auction Preview - Palm Beach 21D-5151 Red Ram

Bonhams Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia Auction, April 11, 2011
Hendon, RAF Museum, Lot 309

This unique Allard, Chassis 21D-5151 is the only Palm Beach originally fitted with the 4.0-litre Dodge 'Red Ram' V8 engine. It was sold new to Bernardo Wolfenson of Buenos Aires, Argentina on April 2, 1954, who apparently toured Europe with it prior to taking it to Argentine, before returning to the UK in the 1960s. The car comes with a copy of the original Allard order (ordered March 16, 1954) confirming its first owner and 'Home delivery' as it was despatched on the Dover-Boulogne ferry. This car was the prototype for what could have potentially been an exciting relationship between Allard and the Dodge motor company. Dodge was hoping to add a car to their lineup that could compete with the Chevrolet Corvette.

The All-Weather J2X

A note from Lindsey P…

“Here's the photo I had mentioned to you that Jerry (second owner of J2X 3147) sent me of this ugly duckling. It does appear to be a perfectly stock J2X with a Perry Fina canvas top. We don't know who's car it was. The top was really not as unattractive as it appears in this photo as the camera angle here does not do it justice at all.

The use of the top on my car was as much to deflect the direct sunlight as it was to keep out the rain. With it engaged, and the side curtains in place, it did provide decent driving conditions in most adverse weather conditions. I was able to use the car daily at Colgate University during winter driving conditions in upper New York State although the car was a real pisser in snow and ice !!!

I used to drive up from college to Stowe or Lake Placid on winter weekends with my skis sticking out  above the right passenger door with that passenger side curtain removed. I guess it did present an interesting sight for following cars.”

Allards @ Amelia - Friday

Greetings from sunny Amelia Island! I'm sitting in the courtyard at the Ritz-Carlton watching the waves crash on the beach. So far the weekend has been wonderful. Friday morning started off with the Concours Tour, which was open to the three featured marques - Duesenberg, Kurtis, and Allard. Around 25 cars made the trip...of those 14 were Allards. The driivers reported that the drive was gorgeous, but chilly. The tour wrapped up in downtown Ferdinandia, where the public was invited to check out the cars for a few hours. After that, we proceeded to the Gooding & Co auction for their preview party and to check out the K1/2, which sold for $150,000. We then drove back to the Ritz to preview the RM Auction and their K2. The day wrapped up with a nice dinner at a local Peruvian restaurant recommended by the Rosenblad's.

Wish you were here!

Gooding Amelia Island Auction Preview - Allard K1/2-1703

SOLD! $150,000 ($165K W/Comm)

On Friday March 11, Gooding & Co will auction this unique Allard K1/2, Chassis #1703. You're probably wondering why we're calling this a K1/2...visually it's a K1, but mechanically it's actually a K2. The car was originally ordered as a K2, but the US dealer, Forbes required an early delivery. To meet the short lead time, the K2 chassis was fitted with a leftover K1 body. From the photos, the car looks to be in very good condition. To view more photos and information about this car, please click here. Please note registration (free) will be required to view the photos and detailed information.

How do you save your foreclosed home? Buy an Allard J2.

You have to love the internet. If you look hard enough and know the right words to search for...you can find some great stuff. The other day I was reading the H.A.M.B. and I found this great comic about a wife that bought an Allard J2 so she could win a race to pay the mortgage on the family home, which of course was due to be foreclosed. Who knew that 60 years later the story would still be so relevant!

This story was printed in the comic book, "Hot Rods & Racing Cars" (Issue #10, 1951) and was penned by Dick Giordano, aka Richi Giordano.

Gathering of The Clan, 2011

Many of us have fond memories of the first Gathering of the Clan in November 2003. That was when 17 Allards and upwards of 50 Allard owners and enthusiasts responded to Corinthian Vintage Auto Racing’s (CVAR) invitation for a weekend of racing and camaraderie at Texas World Speedway - about 100 miles northwest of Houston.

CVAR and Texas World Speedway has extended an invitation to Allard folks to join them at Bryan TX for a reprise this coming November. So, mark your calendars for the weekend of November 4, 5, and 6.

Spotted!! Gen 2 Allard M Prototype

Special thanks to a curious reader who spotted this Generation 2 Allard M prototpe on the streets of Redhill in Surrey. The car was the product of the reformed Allard Motor Company from back in the early 90's formed by Sydney's son Alan, Designer Chris Humberstone, and a few racer/investors. The company is probably best known for the Group C J2X racer, but they also built this car. If you know anything about it or who it is currently owned by, please let us know!
