Trophies...

The latest from Bill Bauder...

"Well the Bitch did it again, we won our class as well as Best Sports Car, two trophies and ribbons. This time we made the Tour of about 75 miles without any trouble except maybe ruining Ginger's back when we hit a few bumps. Good thing she had on her safety belt. This was the inaugural event and was done by the people who started the Medowbrook show and headed up by Lolly Bezy who did a bang up job. We trailered over on Thursday and returned home on Monday and had a great time meeting old friends and making new friends. Every one liked the Allard, the Bitch that is, and she preformed flawlessly except when I forgot to turn on the fuel pump switch." ---Cheers, Bill

Congrats Bill and thanks for keeping the Allard flag flying!

Notes from a Nervous Navigator on
Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique 2012  -  29 Jan to 4 Feb

Car No:239:- 1950, Allard P1
Driver – David Loveys, Co-driver – Roger Loveys

In January 2011 David announced his intention to enter the rally to mark the achievement of Sidney Allard winning the Monte-Carlo 60 years ago. It was only when I was presented with the application form to check that I knew this was a serious project. I immediately started my research and discovered Richard Disbrow, a driver who had completed the rally in 2011. Richard proved to be brilliant. I met up with him and he always responded immediately to my email requests for information and did his best to alert us to the extreme nature of the event – “Its unbelievable, a flat out road race from start to finish. I don’t know how the French allow it on their roads”. I also arranged to drive to Nice to visit friends so that I could check out part of the route and familiarise myself with driving and navigating in France, something I had not done for over 20 years.

Allard Completes Mille Miglia North America

By Chuck Warnes

This past summer Dr. Martin Allard was invited to run his K3 on the inaugural Mille Miglia North America three-day rally. The route was over a broad array of scenic and challenging bi-ways on a round trip from Santa Barbara up to Stinson Beach, north of San Francisco.

Martin has owned his Cad-powered K3, chassis 3129 since 1979. The previous owner bought it new from Noel Kirk Motors in Los Angeles, and put 23,000 miles on it before knee problems forced him to park it in 1962. Despite the 17-year hibernation, Martin says the only work required was some minor tweaking to free up the stuck Lincoln Zephyr gearbox.

Allard to be Featured at the Glenmoor Gathering!

Good news! Special thanks to Allard owner Tom Kayuha for lobbying the Glenmoor Gathering Concours to select Allard as a featured marque in their fine Concours this year. The Concours will also feature Tucker cars and Early Supercharged Automobiles - in addition to the usual classes. The event will be held September 14-16 at the Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, Ohio. We spoke with David Schultz, Director of the Gathering and he explained that they’re hoping to attract 25-30 Allard’s of all levels of finish. The Allards will be featured in a special class that won’t be judged, however special awards will be handed out. They are hoping to show the public a cross section of Allard’s including cars that are un-restored, race cars, and 100-point Concours cars.

In addition to the Concours, the Glenmoor Gathering features the scenic Countryside Tour through the twisting back roads of Ohio. Invited participants will receive two admission tickets for Sunday, a professional photo on engraved walnut plaque, secure trailer parking, admission for two to Afterglow Party (immediately following Sunday's Concours), souvenir program, and Concours poster. Several special activities and events will take place throughout the weekend to keep participants and their families busy. After talking with past participants Tom Kayuha and Peter Bowman, it’s clear that the Glenmoor team goes the extra mile to make their guests feel welcome.

To learn more about the Glenmoor Gathering, please visit their web site, www.glenmoorgathering.com. Once there, you can print the registration form or fill it electronically.

As you can imagine, this is a great (and affordable) opportunity for Allard owners from the Northeast to get together and enjoy their cars both on the road and on the lawn. We hope to see you there!

Rallye Monte Carlo Historique - 2012

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Sydney Allard’s victory in the Monte Carlo Rally, an Allard once again braved the roads from Glasgow to Monte Carlo in competition. The Rallye Monte Carlo Historique (RMCH) is essentially the modern running of the same rally Sydney won 60 years ago. Typically the RMCH is limited to cars produced between 1955 and 1980, but thanks to the lobbying efforts of Allard owner and Monte Carlo resident, Alex Edmonds, the 1950 Allard P1 of AOC Captain Dave Loveys and brother Roger was granted special entry.

Report: Gathering the Clan, Texas 2011

-Words: Chuck Warnes         -Photos: Bob Weiner

Corinthian Vintage Auto Racing held their 20th Annual Vintage Fall Festival the weekend of November 4 – 6. Their gracious invitation to the Allard folks presented the second opportunity in the past eight years for us to enjoy their laid-back hospitality and company at the historic Texas World Speedway.

TWS is located just outside of the twin communities of Bryan/College Station TX, and dates back to its NASCAR origins of the ‘60’s. It began as a steeply banked two-mile oval, and over the years has evolved into a three-mile, fifteen-turn road course that continues to use about half of the original oval.

Monterey 2011

The experience of searching one’s way through Sunday morning pre-dawn fog, curves and pines of Pebble Beach is somewhat surreal. At times the only connection with the real world seemed to be the intermittent signals from random flashlights that eventually directed us to our parking lot. The experience gave us a special appreciation for the diligent efforts of hundreds of employees and volunteers who had been on duty half the night.

Our goal was to arrive at the Del Monte Lodge before the first of the Pebble Beach Concours entrants began to chug, purr or roar their way from the Polo Grounds to their designated spots on Pebble Beach’s 18th fairway overlooking Carmel Bay and Point Lobos. The low overcast sky and moderate temperatures were a photographer’s and spectator’s dream.

Allards @ Silverstone Classic!

By Mike Knapman

The organisers of the Silverstone Classic set out to make 2011’s Classic the biggest and best ever.  “Rocking & Racing” were the two keywords.  They succeeded. Over 1100 entrants ensured full 52 car maximum grids for the historic races that went on from dawn to after dusk.  120 Classic car clubs and 7,000 thousand classic cars were on display.  A staggering 800 E-Types paraded on Saturday.   80,000 members of the classic car public paid to come in. The weather was not bad either, cloudy with sunny periods or vice-versa. This was “the biggest race meeting ever staged in international motor racing history”.

Allards Running in the ‘Wet’ at Sonoma

By Steve Schuler and Cordell Bahn

Two Allard J2’s ran in the 2nd annual Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival at Infineon Raceway (formerly Sears Point) on the weekend of June 4 - 5.

Activities commenced with Wednesday’s practice in the rain. They then took advantage of a 'quick and dirty' practice session on Thursday afternoon after tech. They were glad for it, because it was the only hot period on the track with a completely dry road course.

H&H Tackle the Mille Miglia Storica– May 2011

Some time ago I bought a 1950 Allard J2 that was supplied new to Colonel Rupert Larrinaga. An amateur racing driver and personal friend of Sydney Allard, Larrinaga was also a gifted skier who twice represented Great Britain at the Winter Olympics. ‘My’ J2 was one of several models he campaigned in anger during his four decades of stewardship. Though, by the time the two-seater passed to me it had been unregistered for several years was in need of some recommissioning, as well as painting.

Allards @ Amelia - Friday

Greetings from sunny Amelia Island! I'm sitting in the courtyard at the Ritz-Carlton watching the waves crash on the beach. So far the weekend has been wonderful. Friday morning started off with the Concours Tour, which was open to the three featured marques - Duesenberg, Kurtis, and Allard. Around 25 cars made the trip...of those 14 were Allards. The driivers reported that the drive was gorgeous, but chilly. The tour wrapped up in downtown Ferdinandia, where the public was invited to check out the cars for a few hours. After that, we proceeded to the Gooding & Co auction for their preview party and to check out the K1/2, which sold for $150,000. We then drove back to the Ritz to preview the RM Auction and their K2. The day wrapped up with a nice dinner at a local Peruvian restaurant recommended by the Rosenblad's.

Click here to enjoy some photos from Friday.

Wish you were here!

Cheers,
Colin Warnes

Gathering of The Clan, 2011

Many of us have fond memories of the first Gathering of the Clan in November 2003. That was when 17 Allards and upwards of 50 Allard owners and enthusiasts responded to Corinthian Vintage Auto Racing’s (CVAR) invitation for a weekend of racing and camaraderie at Texas World Speedway - about 100 miles northwest of Houston.

CVAR and Texas World Speedway has extended an invitation to Allard folks to join them at Bryan TX for a reprise this coming November. So, mark your calendars for the weekend of November 4, 5, and 6.

Amelia Island Update - Party!

Amelia Island residents and Allard owners Axel & Hanko Rosenblad have graciously offered to host a party for all Allard owners on Saturday night before the main Concours! The cocktail party will have beer, wine, soda/tea/non-alcoholic beverages, a variety of mixed drinks (but not a full bar) and 'heavy hors d'oeuvres.’ We doubt that anyone will leave hungry! The party will start at 6:30pm.
